GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Education Committee shall carry out the SPE objectives of promoting scientific and engineering knowledge pertaining to plastics. The Committee will maintain communications between the Section and high schools, vocational schools, colleges, and universities in our area that offer, or may be interested in offering, a program in plastics technology. The Education Committee may also assist the institutions in curriculum development and summer job placement.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
The Education Committee shall identify needs of Section members for education programs in plastics-related fields and strive to provide opportunities to fulfill these needs.

The Committee shall cooperate with educational institutions in the area to serve the plastics industry by instituting or improving appropriate programs.

The Education Committee may be responsible for securing speakers on careers in the plastics industry to make presentations at area educational institutions.

The Education Committee may select seminars appropriate for section members and make arrangements for their presentation.

The Education Committee shall have the responsibility for any Section property related to educational activities, such as signs or training aids.

The Education Committee has the responsibility for initiating development of Student Chapters of SPE at institutions within their geographical area and maintaining contact once such Chapters are established.

EDUCATION CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILTIES

  1. Schedule committee meetings as required.
  2. Assign a liaison representative to each school.
  3. Liaison representatives should make contact with representatives from each school and/or student chapter to make available the resources of SPE, to obtain an overview of their plastics programs and enrollment figures, and to familiarize them with the procedure for requesting financial assistance.
  4. Evaluate requests for financial assistance (at Committee meetings).
  5. Submit articles on the Education Committee’s work and school technical programs to the newsletter (several times a year).
  6. Give a report on the Education Committee’s activities at Board meetings. (Monthly).

The Education Committee also has general and specific responsibilities for the Educational Foundation, as presented below:

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Our growing industry is creating more job opportunities than there are qualified people to fill them. To help meet this challenge, the SPE Detroit Section Education Foundation was established in 1987. The Foundation is a non-profit Michigan charitable organization which intends to provide funds to help advance the Detroit Section efforts in education.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Report to the Board on a monthly basis.
  2. Coordinate the Foundation activities with those of the Section’s Education Committee and the Automotive Division’s Education Committee.
  3. Solicit input from Section Board members.
  4. Present proposals for solicitation of funds from the Section.
  5. Establish and maintain detailed financial records.

The Education Committee has general and specific responsibilities pertaining to the Education Fund as well, as follows:

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Education Committee will work to maximize both the actual amount collected for the fund and the participation of the membership. Fund-raising venues will principally be the 50/50 raffle conducted at each section meeting and various opportunities at the annual golf outing.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Chairperson
    a. Oversee the overall collection of funds.
    b. Maintain a listing of fund solicitors.
    c. Maintain the needed inventory of supplies, including the tickets and tumbler.
    d. Keep records detailing totals, prizes, and fund-raisers.
  2. Solicitors
    a. Report to the Chairperson.
    b. Sell 50/50 tickets at the Section meetings.
    c. Participate at various fund-raising opportunities at the Section golf outing.

A drawing will be held at each meeting, and the results will be reported at the
next Board meeting, with the following information presented:

  1. Amount collected
  2. Prize amounts
  3. Amount added to the Education Fund
  4. Recognition of all solicitors by organization

These communications will be followed up with a report, either written or verbal, at the next Board meeting. This report will contain essentially those matters discussed at the section meeting.
